Brace for 11-hour electricity outage

Parts of Pietermaritzburg must brace themselves for an 11-hour power outage on Thursday.

According to the Msunduzi Municipality, the Retief Primary Substation will be switched off for planned maintenance on medium voltage switchgear at the substation.

Msunduzi Electricity Supply Services said the outage will commence on Thursday and will last 11 hours.

It is scheduled to begin at 7 am and finish by 6 pm on Thursday evening.

An alternative date was also provided for April 9, beginning at 7 am and ending by 6 pm; however, the alternate dates will apply if work, for some reason, cannot be undertaken on Thursday.

The areas which will be affected by the power outage include: Montrose, Chase Valley, Townbush, parts of Athlone, Townhill, Greys Hospital, Liberty Mall, Cascades, Northern Park, Chasedene, Oak Park, City East, Victoria Road, Greyling Street up to Boshoff Street, Symons Centre, Pietermaritz Street, Slatter Street, Bateman Street, Church Street, Boshoff Street, Longmarket Street, Masukwana Street, Capital Centre, Howick Road, Victoria Country Club and surrounding areas.

The second planned outage is set for April 11 and is expected to last four hours.

The second outage is scheduled to start at 8 am and finish at 12 pm.

If the work cannot be undertaken on that day, the municipality provided an alternate date of April 16 for the work to be completed.

The following areas will be affected by the second planned outage: Signal Hill; Prestbury; Lester Park; Clarendon; Wembley; Boughton; Blackridge; Sunnyside; Napierville; Mpumuza; Sweetwaters; Hilton; Hilton Gardens; Winterskloof; Mountain Homes; Berryhill; Worlds View; CBD; Mayor’s Walk and surrounding areas.

The municipality advised consumers to treat all electrical equipment and installations as live at all times.
