A police officer who allegedly assaulted his girlfriend on Sunday night is expected to appear at Hammersdale Magistrates’s Court on Thursday.
The 39-year-old sergeant who is stationed at Mpumalanga Police Station in Hammersdale, was arrested on Tuesday morning in connection with a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, after he allegedly assaulted his 29-year-old girlfriend.
According to KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the incident took place along the Mthoko Mkhize Main Road on Sunday night.

Netshiunda said there are also investigations already underway into the woman’s allegations that she was initially refused to open a case.
“Should there be any substance on the allegations, internal processes will be instituted and responsible officers will be subjected to appropriate departmental steps.
“The South African Police Service prioritises gender-based violence cases and frontline police officers abide by the Domestic Violence Act and should act accordingly,” he said.
Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi said that police officers should be exemplary and walk the talk.
Women and children must be and feel safe around men, they must feel even safer in the presence of police officers, whether on or off duty. Police officers must champion the fight against any form of violence perpetrated against women and children.
“If police officers commit any crime, we shall arrest them and ensure that they face the wrath of the law”, said Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi.
Metro cop arrested for murder
In another separate matter, a Durban Metro police officer was arrested and will be appearing in court on Tuesday after he allegedly stabbed his girlfriend and fellow metro police officer to death and shared graphic videos of the woman dying on Sunday.
